The goal of the Sumus Trust is to
develop an economically viable, ecologically sustainable and socially acceptable
civilization that can satisfy the reasonable needs, wants and potential of its
entire people in perpetuity,
With few exception, humans are
driven by a desire to avoid unnecessary pain and suffering and to satisfy a
predictable range of human needs and wants. Human conduct is largely governed by
the pursuit of these needs and wants, and by individual knowledge, attitudes,
values and beliefs.
As most people seek to satisfy
their reasonable needs and wants; and the process of satisfying these needs and
wants in a civilized society involves a process of specialization, cooperation
and mutual service, the goal of an economically viable and ecologically
sustainable is realistic and achievable.
An economically viable and
ecologically sustainable civilization logically requires appropriate human
conduct, consistent with this aim.
The main impediments to this goal
include:
- Inappropriate human
knowledge attitudes, values and beliefs
- Overpopulation in some areas
- Overconsumption and
excessive waste in some areas
- Inappropriate technology and
use of fossil fuels
Various knowledge and belief
systems compete to govern the mind and conduct of man. Competition is necessary
to evolve the most appropriate knowledge, products, services, attitudes, values,
beliefs and resulting human conduct that is consistent with the goal of a viable
and sustainable civilization. In some cases, war may be necessary to eliminate
superseded and redundant knowledge and belief systems.
Sumus means "We Are". It is a
Latin first person plural, palindrome pun on the Hebrew "Name of God" I AM (in a
continuous tense). The name Ehyeh in Hebrew translates approximately to Sum in
Latin. The plural of Sum is Sumus, a palindrome with an obvious intended
meaning.
The Trust invites sponsors and
active members who are willing to contribute to the social purpose of Sumus.
